A baby's sleep can be affected by the simplest outside stimuli. That is why more and more parents are turning to a simple solution that helps many babies: white noise.
🔊 What is white noise?
White noise is a steady, monotonous sound that contains all sound frequencies at equal intensity. In practice, it resembles the sound of a fan, a radio with no signal, or household appliances.
👶 How does it help your baby's sleep?
1. It mimics the sounds of the womb
The sounds of the womb are steady and continuous – blood flow, heartbeats, breathing. White noise reminds the infant of them, offering familiarity and security, especially in the first weeks of life.
2. It helps relaxation & reduces stress
White noise can calm the baby's nervous system and help them fall asleep faster and with less fuss. In one study, 80% of the babies who listened to white noise fell asleep in less than 5 minutes.
3. It masks outside noises
White noise works like a “shield” against sudden sounds – such as doors, voices, televisions or car horns – that could otherwise wake the baby.
🛡️ How to use it safely
- Volume: Keep the volume below 50 dB – about as loud as a quiet conversation.
- Distance: Place the device at least 1–2 metres from the cot.
- Use only during sleep: Not throughout the day, so that the child's auditory stimulation and learning are not reduced.
✅ What you gain
- Better, deeper sleep for the baby
- Fewer sounds that wake them
- Calm and stability in the environment
- Lower stress for both the baby and the parents
