Sleep mask: what it offers and when to use one

When a sleep mask helps, which material to choose, and how to wear and care for it so you sleep more comfortably.

Μάσκα ύπνου: τι προσφέρει και πότε να τη χρησιμοποιείς

A sleep mask helps when light keeps you from falling asleep or wakes you early: from the street, from the morning light, or from a screen left on. It blocks the light before it reaches your eyes, and for many people that is enough to sleep more deeply and with fewer interruptions.

Why darkness matters

The body has a natural clock that sets when you feel sleepy and when you wake up. Light tells the brain it is daytime, and darkness that it is time to sleep. Melatonin, the hormone linked to sleep, rises when it gets dark and falls with light.

That is why a dark and cool room helps sleep. In practice this is not always easy: curtains do not block all the light, and screens and the indicator lights on devices add to it. A mask is the simplest way to make darkness without changing the room.

When it is worth trying

  • If you cannot make the room dark enough.
  • If you wake very early with the sun.
  • If you work shifts and sleep during the day.
  • If you travel, by plane, bus or car, or sleep in an unfamiliar place.
  • If you share the room with someone who reads or works late in the evening.
  • If you are sensitive to light. If you have migraines, talk to a doctor about what helps you.

A mask is not a miracle. If you do not sleep well for other reasons, such as stress, noise or a mattress that does not suit you, something else will be needed too. And if sleep problems persist, talk to a doctor.

Which material to choose

The material makes a big difference to comfort, because the mask stays on your face all night.

  • Cotton: it breathes and is a safe choice, especially in summer.
  • Satin: it is smooth and soft, and suits anyone bothered by fabric on the face.
  • Silk: it is very soft for sensitive skin, but needs careful washing.
  • Polyester: it is light and easy to adjust, but it breathes less and may make you sweat.
  • Memory foam: contoured masks do not press on the eyes, but they may feel warm.

How to choose the right mask

It should not be too tight, because it presses on the eyes and may give you a headache. Nor too wide, because it lets light in at the sides. The strap should hold the mask in place without pulling your hair.

When you try it on, close your eyes and notice whether you feel pressure on the eyelids or light getting in near the nose. Think about heat too. On hot, humid summer nights a mask can become bothersome, and then a light cotton fabric helps more. If it feels tight or warm, take it off and see whether the darkness or the comfort rests you more.

How to get used to it

The first nights it may feel strange. Put it on a little before you go to sleep, while you read or wind down, so the body links it with sleep. Give it a week or two before you judge whether it helps.

And if a mask does not suit you, there are alternatives: thicker curtains, covering the small indicator lights on devices, and keeping screens away from the bed.

Care and hygiene

Because it touches your skin every night, the mask needs regular cleaning. Check the label: some can go in the washing machine, others only by hand. Keep it somewhere clean, and if your skin or eyes get irritated, stop wearing it and ask a doctor.

Sleep is easier in the right bed

A mask makes the darkness, but sleep also needs a bed that supports you. Browse the pillows and the mattresses. If you do not know what suits you, Sleep Match asks how you sleep and what you like and suggests mattresses.

In short

A sleep mask is a simple tool for anyone who cannot darken the room or is bothered by light. Choose a material that breathes and a fit that does not press, and clean it regularly.
