A Queen is usually 160 × 200 cm and a King is 180 × 200 cm or larger. The difference in width is 20 cm, which means 10 cm more for each of you. If your bedroom is average in size, a Queen is usually enough; if you have the space and want to stretch out without thinking about the person next to you, a King is the most comfortable choice.
The sizes at a glance
Before you compare, put the sizes side by side. The usual mattress sizes in Greece are 90 × 190/200, 140 × 190/200, 150 × 200 and 160 × 200 cm. The 160 × 200 cm is what we normally call a Queen. Beyond that come the Kings, starting at 180 × 200 cm.
The names «Queen» and «King» are not absolute. So always check the exact dimensions on the mattress page, not just the name.
How much room each person gets
On a 160 cm Queen, each person has about 80 cm of width. On a 180 cm King, each has 90 cm, the same as a 90 × 200 cm single mattress. The difference shows most when you toss and turn, sleep with your arms stretched out, or when one of you sleeps restlessly.
Your sleeping position counts too. Someone who sleeps spread out, with arms and legs stretched wide, takes up much more room than someone who sleeps curled up on their side. If you and your partner sleep in different ways, a wider bed helps so that neither of you has to adapt to the other.
If children or pets often climb into the bed, a King gives everyone more room to breathe. A Queen, on the other hand, is a comfortable size for two adults who do not need much extra space, or for someone who sleeps alone and wants more room than a single.
When to choose a Queen
- The bedroom is small or average and you want to keep space for bedside tables and a wardrobe.
- Two of you sleep in the bed and a more compact bed does not bother you.
- You live in an apartment where every square metre counts.
When to choose a King
- The room fits it comfortably and there is walking space on both sides of the bed.
- You want each person to have their own space, especially if your sleeping habits differ.
- Children or pets sleep in the bed too.
- You are tall and need more than 200 cm of length.
Measure the room before you decide
A King needs more space, and the width of the mattress is not the only thing that counts. Measure the room and mark the size of the bed on the floor with masking tape. That way you see at once whether there is a walkway left to move around, open doors and drawers and make the bed.
Measure the bed itself as well. Leave a gap of 1–2 cm around the mattress so it goes in easily and does not jam. A good rule is that the room should feel open, not full of bed. If a King makes the room feel cramped, a Queen with plenty of space around it will please you more.
Do not forget what goes with the mattress. The bed frame and headboard take up space as well, and with a King you will need sheets and duvets in a matching large size.
If the ready-made sizes do not suit you
Most ORION mattresses can also be made in sizes of your choice. You enter the width and length on the mattress page and see the price at once. This is useful when your bed has unusual dimensions or you want extra length.
Size is only half of the decision, though. How firm or soft the mattress is matters too. On every mattress page, firmness is shown on a 1–10 scale: up to 3.5 is soft, 4 medium-soft, 4.5–5 medium, 5.5–6 medium-firm and 6.5 and above firm. If you do not know where to start, Sleep Match asks how you sleep and what you like and suggests mattresses.
In short
Choose a Queen if space is limited and a King if you want room to spare and your bedroom can take it. Browse the mattresses in the sizes you are considering and, if you can, try them in person: you can try ORION mattresses in more than 200 stores.
