Deep sleep: what it is and why it matters so much

What is deep sleep and in which stage does it occur? Discover the difference between the N1, N2, N3 and REM stages and why the quality of rest matters.

Βαθύς Ύπνος: Τι Είναι και Γιατί Είναι Τόσο Σημαντικός;

Sleep is not a single state. During the night, the body repeatedly passes through different stages of rest.

These stages form cycles that repeat several times until morning. Each stage has a different role.

The stages of sleep

Sleep is divided into two basic phases: NREM sleep and REM sleep.

NREM sleep includes three stages. As you move from the first to the third, sleep gradually becomes deeper.

N1 — Transition to sleep

N1 is the first and shortest stage.

It is the moment when you pass from wakefulness to sleep. The body begins to relax and you can still wake up easily.

N2 — Light sleep

In N2 you have now fallen asleep.

Breathing and heart rate slow down, the muscles relax further and body temperature drops.

N3 — Deep sleep

N3 is the deepest stage of NREM sleep.

In this phase it is harder to wake up. The body is in a state of intense rest and physical recovery.

More deep sleep usually occurs during the first half of the night.

REM — The phase of most dreams

REM sleep is a different phase. It is not a deeper level than N3.

During it, brain activity increases and most dreams occur. REM periods usually get longer as morning approaches.

How do you support higher-quality sleep?

You cannot directly control how much time you spend in each stage. But you can create better conditions for rest.

Keep a steady sleep schedule, limit caffeine and alcohol late in the day and make sure the bedroom stays quiet, dark and pleasantly cool.

Comfort plays a part

A mattress that supports the body properly and a suitable pillow help reduce disturbances during the night.

When the body relaxes without unnecessary interruptions, better conditions are created for steady and refreshing sleep.

Conclusion

Deep sleep is N3, the deepest stage of NREM sleep. It is an important part of the body's natural process of rest.

Quality sleep does not depend only on the total hours. It needs consistency, good habits and an environment that allows the body to truly relax.

At ORION Strom, we believe that meaningful rest starts with the conditions you create every night.
