When is it time to replace your mattress?

Since ancient times, various cultures have highlighted the importance of good sleep for human health and well-being. What for the people of previous centuries was empirical knowledge, nowadays, is something that has been confirmed many times by a series of scientific researches .

Unfortunately, however, for a large percentage of our fellow human beings, especially in the countries of the Western World, "good sleep" is a goal that is not always achieved. Research has shown that 15% to 35% of adults face sleep problems, which concern either the quality of sleep or the quantity. The result of sleep problems is that people feel tired and in a bad mood during the day, with all that this implies for their health, psychology, and productivity.

The reasons why you don't sleep well can be many and of a different nature. One of the main reasons can be the quality or age of the mattress. As important as it is to make the right choice when buying the mattress , on which you know you will spend about 1/3 of your day, it is just as important to be able to diagnose when your mattress no longer meets your needs and you have to change it.

When should a mattress be changed?

If you're starting to wonder whether or not it's time to buy a new mattress and replace your old one, then the answer to your question is probably yes.

If you wake up feeling rested, relaxed, and refreshed, then your mattress should probably stay put, no matter how old it is. If, on the contrary, you wake up tired and tight, and there are no other obvious reasons for this, then you should definitely see if you need a new mattress.

There are no clear rules about when one should change one's mattress. But there are some things he should take into account.

Age of the mattress

Research shows that the "lifetime" of each layer counts. This time is not the same for every mattress, as each one is made of different materials, of different quality and durability. In general, however, an anatomical mattress must be replaced every 7 – 10 years, while an orthopedic mattress can be used for up to 12 years without problems.

Appearance of bumps and asymmetries in the mattress

It is quite common for mattresses that have been used for many years to develop bumps on their surface. Also, the mattress may show some other kind of asymmetries (one side is lower, higher, softer, harder, smoother than the other). The result is uncomfortable sleep, griping, muscle aches and other health problems, and thus, mattress replacement is required.

Change in body weight

A mattress ideal at the time of purchase may prove unsuitable if you have gained or lost significant weight in the meantime. In this case, the mattress must be replaced immediately, regardless of its age or not.

You wake up in pain

A mattress should provide you with proper support to get a restful sleep. If you still wake up with back and neck pain, you should consider possible underlying orthopedic problems. In this case, the purchase of a suitable orthopedic mattress is a decision that cannot be postponed.

You show allergies

If you often wake up with a stuffy nose and watery eyes for no apparent reason, then dust mites, dust, and other germs are probably having a party in your mattress.

A good cleaning of the mattress will definitely improve the situation. But, in some cases, and over time, the accumulation of dust and moisture in the mattress is such that the improvement will only be temporary.

Your mattress makes noises

A proper mattress should be sturdy and quiet. If you are lying or turning on the mattress, and you hear creaking or other noises, it is probably an indication that the mattress is not suitable to give you the restful sleep you desire.
